Final Evaluation

Having completed the Gothic Horror unit and creating a TV series character, I have realised that I really enjoy special effects make-up, inspiring me  to choose it as my optional unit next year. Overall, I have really enjoyed looking at the Gothic Horror genre and creating my own make-up design to fit the brief. I really enjoy the designing and researching side of projects, my knowledge has expanded enabling me to create a well thought out design. In terms of the TV series character, I loved having to think about how everything could fit together. As a whole I feel this unit has given me an insight into what it would be like to work in the Film and TV industry and the amount of work it takes to create a character.

I have gained a range of new skills and techniques from this project.  I had to work with new products and tools as well as thinking about the health and safety elements involved.  When creating the wounds, I have learnt that applying colour is easiest when you layer the tones of colours. With the unit being based on continuity, it is easier to build on something that you have already created rather than take something away. For example, in my character look I created dark and bruised eyes. I started with the lightest colour first and then gradually got darker. This way I could see if the two eyes were similar in colour and change anything if I needed to. In terms of difficulties, in particular I found completing fake burns with the use of gelatine challenging. I find this technique really effective and I would like to build on this and improve for the future.

When researching ideas and background information on all of my characters, I looked at other make-up artists for inspiration. I found Youtube videos gave me tips and ideas that I could incorporate in my designs. In particular, I researched other artists creating cuts.
I am extremely pleased with the final outcomes of my design. The similarity in the two of my assessments was precise. The only clear thing that I can see is the darkness and width of the contour on the cheeks. Two days before I was about to complete my final assessment, I unfortunately fell ill and I was not able to finish it on the day. As well as this my model had made the decision to leave University and would not be returning. I did not want these circumstances to affect my final look and so I arranged with my tutors to come in and complete the whole assessment again from the start with a new model. The photos that I was working from also came out a completely different colour when I printed them. This was frustrating because they were not an accurate representation of what I had previously completed. I thankfully had taken photos on my phone that I could refer to. In terms of my TV characters, I feel that everything went as well as it could have.

If I were to complete the unit again I would consider making my first character of Peter Quint less harsh and dark. Even though he is a ghost and I wanted to design him as though he has come back as himself, I would design the final look a lot lighter and possibly not use a white base. Other than this, I feel that I researched into the genre effectively, as well as into my character. In terms of my TV series characters I would possibly change the words that I chose. I do not feel like they gave me enough variety and experimentation. I would also look at photographing my models with more expression in the face, however I wanted to focus on the make-up design that I had created. I am really happy about my work for this unit and believe the effort I have put in has translated well into successful final images.

Mrs Laderman

I have completed the make-up of my character Mrs Laderman. She is the victim in my storyline that I introduced into the TV series of Dexter. Before creating my final look, I researched and thought about what make-up would suit her and help portray her storyline. I then designed the hair, make-up and styling for my character.

Products used
- Kryolan foundation
- Kryolan concealer palette
- Illamasqua sculpting palette
- Illamasqua translucent powder
- Kryolan supra colour palette - red, pink, yellow, blue
- Maybelline mascara
- Fake Blood
- Wound filler
- Glycerin
- Ben Nye wax
- Spatula
- Range of brushes
- Cotton buds
- Comb
- Bandage

I wanted Mrs Ladermans make-up to be visible under the cut, bruises and blood. When she was held hostage, she was going about her normal life therefore her make-up is something that she would wear everyday. I wanted to really experiment with my character because there were no boundaries. I really enjoyed learning about special effects this term, therefore I wanted to incorporate some of the wounds that I had learnt. The biggest aspect of my final look is the cut on the side of the cheek. After watching Dexter I saw that he gave every one of his victims a cut on the side of the cheek. I wanted to complete a cut on my victim to show that Dexter has had some influence. I had practiced the cut before I completed the final look. As well as this a cut had been the main aspect of my previous character assessment. I felt confident in creating this and I was really pleased with the realistic outcome. Using the supra colour palette I created bruised and tired eyes. I placed this in the inner corner of the eye, underneath and slightly on the lid. I found that using my finger allowed me to blend out the colours. I also applied some on the forehead to create a graze and on the lips. Over this I stippled on blood. On the lips and nose I applied the blood in a larger quantity so that I dripped down the face. I wanted her to have a bleeding nose and a cut lip for the torture that she has endured. For her hair, I wanted to create something very dramatic that showed the viewer what she may have been through. I backcombed random sections of hair and then applied blood at the front of her head and in her hair. Secondly, I placed sweat across her forehead and in her hair. This really complimented the whole look and made her look even more like a realistic victim. My chosen word for Mrs Laderman was 'Bandage'. Dexter often bandaged his victims with cling film so they could not move and escape the torture. I did not want to copy this and complete something similar, therefore I took the word literally and tied a bandage covered in blood around her neck. I want this to look like it had been around her mouth so that she could not talk.

I wanted to shoot my character of Mrs Laderman in a location setting. I wanted to experiment with where I was shooting and felt that photographing her against a white background was very simple. I had the idea to shoot her in a setting that made it look like she was being held captive in a dark room. I tried to think about how I would achieve this and looked around my house for the best place to do this. When I came to shoot my final look, I had decided to turn the lights to a dim setting in one of the rooms in my house. I then had my model sit on a chair with her hands tied behind her back. I then photographed my model from different angles. In post production I then added minor changes to the lighting to darken the back ground. I am really pleased with these images because I was unsure how it was gong to turn out. The make-up is still visible and I feel like they exaggerate to the audience that she is the victim.

Overall, I am so pleased with my final outcome of Mrs Laderman. I was really excited about completing this final look because it had so many aspects to it. I had completed a fake cut on the face before, however I decided to research into other ways of creating this but still using the same products. I saw one make-up artist take the wax and roll this into a sausage shape. This would then act as the cut. I found this to be a better and more effective way of creating the cut. I loved the added scratches and grazes on the face and I feel that this really shows the audience what she has been through. If I were to re-design my character, I would look at adding more blood on the face and incorporating more bandages. Finally, I have really enjoyed creating a character for a TV series and making up a storyline and designing the hair and make-up for them.

Claudia

I have completed the make-up and hair styling for my latest character of Claudia. I have incorporated her character into my chosen TV series of Dexter and researched and designed the make-up, hair and styling as well as developing a storyline for her.

Products Used
- Illamassqua matte primer
- Kryolan foundation
- Illamasqua sculpting palette
- Kryolan supra colour palette - red, purple
- Maybelline mascara - black
- Fake blood
- Glycerin
- Bandage

I wanted the overall look of Claudia to be realistic in portraying a psychopathic character. I had researched and thought about what make-up would look best for her. I decided to keep her base make-up very natural so that the attention is not drawn from her psychopathic self. I then added a small amounts of red and purple in the inner corner of the eyes and under the eye. I incorporated this feature into my design because I felt that it showed tiredness as well as her starting to become mental from her new love of torturing people and horror films. I then splattered blood across her face to show the effects of what she had done to Mrs Laderman. This would therefore then connect the two characters. This worked perfectly on the face and looked really realistic. I kept the hair very natural and down, however at the front of the head I added glycerin which acts as sweat as well as a small amount of blood that as fallen in the hair. I think this worked really well and added something extra to the entire look. In the photograph I also had her holding a bandage which would be used to torture and keep Mrs Laderman as a hostage.

I am really pleased with how the entire look photographed and looked. I was apprehensive about Claudias make-up in particular because I wanted her to look like a psychopathic killer. I wanted the fake blood to look as realistic as possible, therefore I knew that I had to apply this randomly to the face. I kept trying to make this look even on the face, however I had to keep telling myself that it needed to look random. I applied more to some areas that others to achieve this. The word that I used for Claudia was awakening. This is not that visible in the photograph, however it features more in her storyline, as her love or revenge and torture awakens. To connect the two characters, I photographed her holding the bandage that can be seen around Mrs Ladermans neck. If I were to complete the look again I would possibly add more interest to the hair, however overall I am really happy with the final look.

Title:  Modern Gothic Horror (Mrs Laderman – Dexter)

Location

Photography Studio: My House – West Sussex

Concept

I have created a character based on the made up character of Mrs Laderman to fit into my chosen TV programme of Dexter. Mrs Laderman decides to move house, however her friend Claudia will not let her leave without her. They move and Claudia lives below her. She becomes suspicious about Claudia and her new friend Dexter as they never seem to leave each other’s sides or their flats. One day she sees that Claudia’s flat door has been left open and decides to look round. She sees pictures or bodies, horror films and a range of torturing tools placed all over the flat. She is shocked and leaves immediately, however she does not know that Claudia has seen her. Mrs Laderman has now become her first target. She is tortured and held hostage.

I have created a character based on the made up character of Claudia to fit into my chosen TV programme of Dexter. When her only friends, Mrs Lademan decides to move, Claudia will only let her if she comes with her. They move to a new area and Claudia becomes friend with her next door neighbour, Dexter. They realise that they both have a love for horror and violence and Dexter goes on to tell her about his secret life as a killer. Mrs Laderman unfortunately is in the wrong place at the wrong time as she enters Claudia’s flat to see if her suspicions about her are true. Claudia sees her do this and feels the only thing to do is to make Mrs Laderman her first victim.

Dexter Styling

The clothing in Dexter is very simple and practical. When both Dexter and Debra are working they are either wearing a uniform or just a basic top with trousers. Anything over the top would not suit the job. Dexter can also be seen wearing a few bright linen shirts. I also looked at Dexter's girlfriends clothing to see if she wore anything different. She wore brighter clothing and always seemed to wear clothes that were bright and feminine. I chose to look at the clothes of some of Dexter's characters because I wanted to think about the clothing of my two characters. After researching into the clothes, I knew that I did not want my characters wearing anything special. Claudia is the killer in my storyline, therefore I do not want her standing out to the public and wearing anything over the top. A simple T-shirt will work perfectly with her look. For Mrs Laderman I want her to be wearing something that she would wear everyday.  A simple collared T-shirt would be best for this. She is taken by Claudia and Dexter while she is going about her everyday life. I wanted her to be wearing something that made the audience connect to her and see that she is a nice lady. I therefore had the idea to have her wearing a simple necklace, so that they can see she has emotion and it may have some meaning to it.

After watching Dexter I came to realise that every time he went to kill, he would always be wearing a tight long-sleeved green top. I decided to research about this and see if there was a reason for this. After researching I came to learn that this top was known as his killing and stalking top. He wears this to show off his muscular body. This gives the impression to his victims that he is more powerful and agile than they are. Wearing the same top also allows the audience to know what is about to happen to happen next in the storyline. If I were to shoot my character more than once I would have them wearing the same outfit.

Hair Charts: Claudia and Mrs Laderman

Hair Charts - Claudia
I knew that I did not Claudia's hair to be very complex, therefore I kept my designs very simple. Her character is more about her personality and storyline, rather than her hair or make-up. I found it hard to come up with a range of different ideas due to the simplicity that I wanted to achieve. I therefore looked at having the hair up and down and deciding what I preferred.

1. In my first design I kept the hair in a simple ponytail on the crown of the head. This will not be entirely neat due to the ordeal that she has put Mrs Laderman through. Small sections of hair will have come astray at the front of the head and it will not be neat. With the hair away from the face, the attention will be on the make-up. I really like this design and I feel that it could definitely work with the entire look as well as her personality.

2. In my next design I would not do a lot to the hair. I would keep it very natural and maybe add in a slight wave to the front of the hair. I may potentially add water to the front of the hair to act as sweat due to the situation she has just been in with Mrs Laderman. I would spray the the water onto the hair so it does not make the hair too wet. I would then brush the hair to evenly spread the water. Similar to the first design, I do really like this design.

Mrs Laderman
I found creating Mrs Laderman's hair designs a lot easier, due to her being the victim of the torture. The hair does not have to be anything amazing and it will be messy. Similar to Claudia, I looked at creating designs that included both her hair being up and down to see which I preferred.

1. In my first design, she will have her hair in a ponytail, however all of her hair will be misplaced and uneven. The front hairs will be astray and there will be a few larger sections that will be pulled out slightly. I will also backcomb the hair in the ponytail itself to make this look more tangled. The front sections of hair will also have a small bit of blood in as well. I think adding the blood will make it look even more realistic.

2. In my next design, the hair is also up but it is in a bun on the top of her head. This is completely messy and does not really resemble a bun shape. Hair at the front of the head will be messy. This design is even more messy than the first design I created. I feel that this could be both a good and a bad thing. The messier the hair the more realistic it will look to the audience that she has been through a bad time. I also feel that it could be too messy and distract the viewer from looking at the face as well. Apart from this I do like this design and would definitely look at completing this hairstyle for my character.

3. In my third design I wanted to look at having the hair down and experimenting more with backcombing and adding water and blood to the front section of the hair. The hair would be natural however I would simply backcomb random sections of the hair. I will spray the hair with water and add more to the small hairs at the front of the head. I could make this stick to the head to add to the whole look. Adding blood onto this would also make it look more effective. I think this hair design would work perfectly with the whole look and is definitely my favourite out of the three.
