Assignment Title:  Modern Gothic Horror (Mrs Laderman – Dexter) Location                                                                Photography Studio: My House – West Sussex Concept I have created a character based on the made up character of Mrs Laderman to fit into my chosen TV programme of Dexter. Mrs Laderman decides to move house, however her friend Claudia will not let her leave without her. They move and Claudia lives below her. She becomes suspicious about Claudia and her new friend Dexter as they never seem to leave each other’s sides or their flats. One day she sees that Claudia’s flat door has been left open and decides to look round. She sees pictures or bodies, horror films and a range of torturing tools placed all over the flat. She is shocked and leaves immediately, however she does not know that Claudia has seen her. Mrs Laderman has now become her first target. She is tortured and held hostage. When her only friends, Mrs Lademan decides to move, Claudia will only let her if she comes with her. They move to a new area and Claudia becomes friend with her next door neighbour, Dexter. They realise that they both have a love for horror and violence and Dexter goes on to tell her about his secret life as a killer. Mrs Laderman unfortunately is in the wrong place at the wrong time as she enters Claudia’s flat to see if her suspicions about her are true. Claudia sees her do this and feels the only thing to do is to make Mrs Laderman her first victim. My Chosen Models

I decided to shoot my two character looks while I was at home. I took this opportunity to use two of my friends from home as models.

Dexter Styling

The clothing in Dexter is very simple and practical. When both Dexter and Debra are working they are either wearing a uniform or just a basic top with trousers. Anything over the top would not suit the job. Dexter can also be seen wearing a few bright linen shirts. I also looked at Dexter's girlfriends clothing to see if she wore anything different. She wore brighter clothing and always seemed to wear clothes that were bright and feminine. I chose to look at the clothes of some of Dexter's characters because I wanted to think about the clothing of my two characters. After researching into the clothes, I knew that I did not want my characters wearing anything special. Claudia is the killer in my storyline, therefore I do not want her standing out to the public and wearing anything over the top. A simple T-shirt will work perfectly with her look. For Mrs Laderman I want her to be wearing something that she would wear everyday.  A simple collared T-shirt would be best for this. She is taken by Claudia and Dexter while she is going about her everyday life. I wanted her to be wearing something that made the audience connect to her and see that she is a nice lady. I therefore had the idea to have her wearing a simple necklace, so that they can see she has emotion and it may have some meaning to it. 

After watching Dexter I came to realise that every time he went to kill, he would always be wearing a tight long-sleeved green top. I decided to research about this and see if there was a reason for this. After researching I came to learn that this top was known as his killing and stalking top. He wears this to show off his muscular body. This gives the impression to his victims that he is more powerful and agile than they are. Wearing the same top also allows the audience to know what is about to happen to happen next in the storyline. If I were to shoot my character more than once I would have them wearing the same outfit.

Hair Charts: Claudia and Mrs Laderman

Hair Charts - Claudia
I knew that I did not Claudia's hair to be very complex, therefore I kept my designs very simple. Her character is more about her personality and storyline, rather than her hair or make-up. I found it hard to come up with a range of different ideas due to the simplicity that I wanted to achieve. I therefore looked at having the hair up and down and deciding what I preferred. 

1. In my first design I kept the hair in a simple ponytail on the crown of the head. This will not be entirely neat due to the ordeal that she has put Mrs Laderman through. Small sections of hair will have come astray at the front of the head and it will not be neat. With the hair away from the face, the attention will be on the make-up. I really like this design and I feel that it could definitely work with the entire look as well as her personality. 

2. In my next design I would not do a lot to the hair. I would keep it very natural and maybe add in a slight wave to the front of the hair. I may potentially add water to the front of the hair to act as sweat due to the situation she has just been in with Mrs Laderman. I would spray the the water onto the hair so it does not make the hair too wet. I would then brush the hair to evenly spread the water. Similar to the first design, I do really like this design. 

Mrs Laderman
I found creating Mrs Laderman's hair designs a lot easier, due to her being the victim of the torture. The hair does not have to be anything amazing and it will be messy. Similar to Claudia, I looked at creating designs that included both her hair being up and down to see which I preferred. 

1. In my first design, she will have her hair in a ponytail, however all of her hair will be misplaced and uneven. The front hairs will be astray and there will be a few larger sections that will be pulled out slightly. I will also backcomb the hair in the ponytail itself to make this look more tangled. The front sections of hair will also have a small bit of blood in as well. I think adding the blood will make it look even more realistic. 

2. In my next design, the hair is also up but it is in a bun on the top of her head. This is completely messy and does not really resemble a bun shape. Hair at the front of the head will be messy. This design is even more messy than the first design I created. I feel that this could be both a good and a bad thing. The messier the hair the more realistic it will look to the audience that she has been through a bad time. I also feel that it could be too messy and distract the viewer from looking at the face as well. Apart from this I do like this design and would definitely look at completing this hairstyle for my character. 

3. In my third design I wanted to look at having the hair down and experimenting more with backcombing and adding water and blood to the front section of the hair. The hair would be natural however I would simply backcomb random sections of the hair. I will spray the hair with water and add more to the small hairs at the front of the head. I could make this stick to the head to add to the whole look. Adding blood onto this would also make it look more effective. I think this hair design would work perfectly with the whole look and is definitely my favourite out of the three. 

Practices of Make-Up

I decided to practice my favourite designs on myself before I shoot my final character looks. I have always found practicing the designs really helpful, because I am able to see which parts I like and dislike and if I need to make any changes to it.

Claudia
Claudia's make-up is nothing very detailed or heavy. Her character profile is based more on her actions rather than her make-up or outfit. I wanted there to be an aspect of her though that enabled the viewer to have some idea of her character storyline, therefore having the blood splatter over her face would help to convey this. I am also looking to have her holding a bandage, similar to what would around Mrs Ladermans neck or mouth. This would therefore connect the two. I chose to place a small amount of red colour around the eyes to help convey her wicked and evil side and to also make her look tired. The rest of her make-up is very simple and natural. I really like this make-up look and think it shows her character really well. I was worried at first about what make-up I was going to complete, however I think I prefer the simple look over my other darker designs that I created. 

Mrs Laderman
Compared to Claudia's look, Mrs Laderman's is a lot more detailed. Due to her being the victim of Claudia and Dexter's malicious ways, she will have been through a lot of things. Dexter's famous torture method is to cut the side of his victims cheek. I therefore created a small fresh cut on the side of her face. I applied a lot of blood to this because it has technically just been cut. Mrs Laderman had a small amount of make-up on before therefore her mascara is smudged and her base make-up is not perfect. I added the smudged mascara last and photographed this before and after. I think I will make slightly lighter and not as dark because I feel that your attention in the second photos are drawn to the eye area. I applied red, purple and a small amount of blue to the eyes where she has been beaten and had to endure being kept in a room. I also created grazes on her forehead and lips and added red and pink tones to these. I am unsure at the moment about where to place the bandage. I am thinking of having this hanging around her neck, to show her mouth. I really like this character look and think it works perfectly together. Due to us being able to create and photograph this in our own time, I wanted to complete a full make up look with as much detail as possible. This also gives me the chance to put into practice what I have learnt this unit. Practicing this gave me the chance to try out my design and see if it worked. 

Claudia's Make-up in Dexter

I want Claudia's make-up look to be simple, yet feature aspects that show her character storyline. I thought that creating a bold make-up look would distract the audience from the most important parts. As a character, Claudia is not into wearing large amounts of make-up. She keeps everything very natural, because she does not want to draw any attention to herself. She wants her secret to be kept a secret and therefore does not want to stand out. 

A build up of sweat will also appear across her
forehead and in the front parts of her hair. This
will cause some of the hair to stick to the forehead.
I will use glycerin to create this and you a sponge
to apply this. After practicing this in class, I feel
confident in applying this and making it look
realistic. 

Using a flicking motion with a brush and also a small stippling sponge, I will apply fake blood to the face. I want this to look like it has come from the torturing of Mrs Laderman. This will also make the audience think about how Claudia and Dexter have tortured her. From looking at photos of blood splatters, the positioning is very random. This makes it look more realistic. Through using a brush and applying the blood randomly, I will hopefully achieve a realistic look. Applying the blood to the face will connect the two characters of Claudia and Mrs Laderman together and portray the storyline through the make-up. I want the whole look to be based around the blood on her face. Her eyes will be slightly red from both her hours of planning her revenge as well as her becoming mental. I want her to look like the psychopathic killer she really is. 

I wanted to create a fake cut on the side of Claudia's face. We were taught a technique to create this in class, however I found that this was sometimes rather tricky especially with the wax I had. It was sometimes hard to place it on the skin. Due to this I decided to try and find a new technique that I could try out. I came across this video that gave a step by step talk on how to create the cut. I tried this out and I found this a lot easier. This allowed me to come to the decision of using this technique in my final design of Claudia.
