To help me develop and work on ideas for my character Peter Quint, I decided to look at other films that focus on ghosts. Looking at these will help build up the profile for my character as I can see the appearance of other ghosts and learn about their background. The films I have chosen feature visible ghosts portrayed by actors as well as ghosts that are not seen throughout the film but still affect the characters.
I decided to look at the Corpse Bride for one of the films. Even though it is an animation film, make-up is still visible on the characters and helps to convey to the audience that they are ghosts. The male character, Victor is seen wearing a similar outfit to what people wore in the Victorian era. I feel this could help me on deciding what my model should wear to help convey my character. In many films, including Corpse Bride they all show the ghosts wearing dark eye make-up. I feel this really helps convey the 'ghostly' feel. I think I will look at applying dark eye make-up to the face. I am still unsure of how dark I want this to be, however due to the background of Quint and the slight evil side to his personality, I am more likely create a darker look. I feel looking at this film really helped me think of new ideas.
Woman in black
Alice Drablow was a widow who lived at Eel Marsh House. She unfortunately dies, and Arthur Kipps visits her house to sort through her paperwork. While at the house a series of weird events occur that has no explanations. Noises, creaking floor boards and even a few appearances from "The Woman in Black" are all experienced by Kipps. Through watching the film you learn that the ghost is in fact Drablow's sister, Jennet. I decided to look at the Woman in Black as one of my films as I feel her storyline and character is very similar to Quint. She makes a reappearance back at the house where she used to live, which is similar to Quint. They are both seen by one person who is at the house and appear and reappear several times. They also both have a connection with children throughout the film and the book. Quint wants to control Miles and maintain their close relationship that they used to have, where as the ghost of Jennet is controlling children throughout the village as she tries to find the body of her son who drowned. Even though my character is a male, the aspects of the ghost are transferable between genders. The dark eyes, chiseled cheeks and dark hair are all aspects that I will look at showing on my character. Through researching this film, I feel like I understand more about how the storyline and background of the character effect the make-up look and this is something which I can look into.
Oculus
I wanted to look at another film that shows the the ghost as more of a human figure. Through looking at this film I have realised how important the eyes are in the make-up look. The eyes of the ghost are extremely bright, almost lit up to show the menacing side. I will not be able to create something like this, but I have had the idea to look at using contacts. I would have to check with my model that they are okay with this, however I know how hard they are to apply. I will also look at using other make-up to show the personality and portray the background of Quint. I am thinking of using red around the eyes to make them stand out out. I have realised that every part of the make-up is important in creating a good character profile.
Through looking at all of these films I have realised how important the whole look is in creating a persuasive character for the audience to connect with. You must really analyse the background of the character for the make-up and the look as a whole to relate to them. I now have a range of ideas that I can experiment with to create a look for Quint.
