Continuity Assessment #1

For this assessment our main focus was on continuity. We would be tested on our abilities to recreate the same look twice during two different occasions. The first week we would create our character profile by completing the make-up and hair that we designed for our chosen character. The second week would be harder, because we would have to complete this look again by trying to get it exactly the same through using the same products and techniques.

Before the assessment I had practiced my look multiple times to test out the products and see what worked best. Having never completed any special effects before all of the products were new to me. I had also created design notes that I could work from.  This meant that I was organised on the day and knew what order I was doing everything in. Due to me to me working with latex, I tested this on my models skin before the assessment to check that he was not allergic. On the day of the assessment I came in to lesson and prepared my work station. I placed on the products on the order that I would use them to help me with my organisation. I then lined up all the brushes that I would be using. I knew that the cut would take me the longest to complete and especially to a standard that I was happy with. I completed the hair first because I did not want any of the talcum powder to fall onto the face if I had completed the make-up beforehand. This did not take that long at all which gave me more time on the make-up. When I used the wax for the first time I found it quite hard to use. It was difficult to smooth out evenly due to how thick it was. Through practicing, I felt confident in my assessment that I could work with the wax and try and make it as smooth as possible. I spent time on this and use the spatula to smooth it out. A few bumps would not matter as much as the layering of products over the top would detract from this and it would also help create an even more realistic cut. I built up the colour and made some areas darker than others. Through researching cuts, they are not the same colour all over therefore adding a variety of colours helped the realism. Darkening the actual cut really helped and created a good base for the blood and wound filler that I added onto the cut. Once I was happy with the cut, I then completed the rest of the face. I had to ensure that the white base was applied all over the face, neck, ears and even the back of the neck as I would be photographing from all angles. I then focused on the eyes by layering red, purple, blue and black and then the red liner. My final steps were to add the black to the contours of the cheeks, neck and under the chin as well as adding red and blue to make the lips pale.

Reflection
Overall, I was really happy with how the first part of my assessment went. The main aspect that I was worried about was the timing. We had an hour and thirty minutes to complete both the hair and make-up. This was the first time we would have had to have done both of these in the time given. The make-up that I was completing was fairly simple, yet there were aspects that would take longer than others. My main focus was to be on the cut on the forehead. I wanted to this to look as realistic as possible as it is one of the main aspects that portrays the profile and story of my character. I was left with plenty of time after I had finished the hair and make-up which I was really pleased with. This meant that when I completed my assessment for the second time, I could pay more attention on the continuity and keep looking back at my photographs and notes.
